MUMBAI: Taking a leaf out of the Chipko movement, residents of Shivaji Park will stage a demonstration on Saturday at the Mahatma Gandhi swimmming pool in Dadar, protesting against the proposed felling of 115 trees by the BMC. The civic body has decided to chop the trees as they are coming in the way of the redevelopment of the pool.
"We have written to the municipal commissioner, the city engineer and our local ward office, asking them not to fell the trees till our petition is settled in court.
We will take up the matter with mayor Shubha Raul,'' said resident Sunita Godbole. The mayor's bungalow is barely a few metres from the swimming pool.
Shivaji Park residents and members of the pool filed a PIL in court, opposing the cutting of the trees. They also objected to the redevelopment of the poll, fearing that it would become unaffordable for middle-class citizens who frequent the pool.
